about

"The sound shifts deftly between the exuberant and celebratory and those Cuban melodies that bring out more complex feelings of nostalgia and deep loss. Influences from the son and country music Santiago is famous for come beautifully from Nestor Lago Machado’s tres guitar, its six metal strings adding reedy riffs over rapped clave and dancing conga rhythms, while Speyer takes melodies spinning with great jazz sensibility. Speyer may be from the UK but he’s managed to achieve that burnished golden trumpet sound Cuba is so famous for." - Jan Fairley, Songlines

"The percussive backdrops, dominated by gurgling bata drums and crisp, stinging timbales, are handled with real finesse but it is the combination of Rafael Cisneros Leskay's tremendously noble voice and the leader's concise, often sparse melodic lines that give the session a real edge, as if everybody understands that deeply rooted Latin folk traditions can be embellished by jazz harmony and a concise arrangement without compromising any communicative power." - Kevin Legendre, Jazzwise

PROYECTO EVOCACIÓN: Speyer's Cuban collaboration with master percussionist Rafael Cisneros (Manolo) of Ballet Folklorico Cutumba - and a fine group of musicians based in Santiago de Cuba. The album was a quick thing, recorded in a small basement studio, hot on the heels of four nights playing for the people on four very different stages in Santago's Festival Del Caribe.
