about

3. Lost at Sea combines 6/8 and 4/4 in an unusual way, with rhythmic changes and accelaration reminiscent of batá music. If this was a new batá toque it would be for Yemaya, revered in Cuba as Orisha of the sea and mother of all living things - and syncretized with Our Lady of Regla, represented in a very old icon of a black madonna in the church at Regla, Havana (photo: shrine in a house in Regla).

Too many people have been lost at sea while seeking refuge - lately here in Europe, the Mediterranean, the English Channel - and at times, in that dangerous stretch of sea between Cuba and the US. But many more have found their way to safety, sometimes against all the odds - and others are still finding it.

Lost at Sea was written for Julia - whose parents found their way here after the devastation of WW2 - and we the descendants are still finding ours. Borrowing from Django Bates: “We are not lost, we are simply finding our way”.
