about
2. Mood Swings has a long story and was the reason for forming Time Zone in the first place. It began as a sketchy attempt to capture a certain feeling from my first visit to Santiago de Cuba. The 11-beat phrase breaks the clave, but the trés/guitar line ties it firmly back into its origins in Son tradicionál. The piece took shape over a period of years (as did a stormy often long-distance relationship, hence perhaps the title, but that’s another story). Back there again for a longer period, I remember working out the basslines on an old piano at one of the music schools, strangely with a Bebop workshop going on in the next room.
We recorded Mood Swings for the first Time Zone album (33 Records, 2004), with this sleeve note: “Santiago de Cuba, heartland of Son, capital del Oriente, where time moves S L O W ”
The piece continued to grow after this, new melodies emerging to complete the arrangement - and only later did the line-up include congas.
Meanwhile I recorded Mood Swings again, this time in Santiago with local musicians - and only after some tricky rehearsals and a search for a trés player who could understand it: the tune’s odd clave placement made it impossible for many, immersed as they are in traditional music. The day was saved by Kiki Valera, from the renowned Familia Valera Miranda - a family band, and several generations of soneros.
'Work' is one of my favourite Monk tunes and I've been working on his music for a long time, often with guitarists. This solo guitar take on ALL his tunes is just great - warm, good natured and true. Loz Speyer / Spherical Records
Petra and Meg went to an island off the coast of Norway to make this record, and deliver 45mins of intense musicality and emotional directness, beyond what you'd think possible for a duo. Loz Speyer / Spherical Records
